that worked so hear goes:
I hunted high country mule deer on public land in NW Wyoming. I backpacked in with all the supplies I would need for 4-5 days. This was a number of years ago.
I went in October and the hunting was tough. It was in the single digits at night and up into the 70's during the day. The movement was very minimal. I saw a few during each day. I shot my buck on the 4th morning right at first shooting light.
There is plenty of public land. I don't think I ever saw another hunter.
If you could go later in the year or closer to the rut it would help quite a bit.
It was a fun hunt. I saw elk, bighorn, buffalo and heard wolves. On the last day the weather changed and the deer movement was a lot better.
Get a good map. When I came down from the mountains and driving through private land with alfalfa fields there was 170 class bucks everywhere it seemed. there are places where the land is intemingled. It might be worth it to try it in those areas.
good luck
if you have any more questions let me know

Go on the WYO game and fish website...they have draw odds and success rates for the past 3-4 years...may be helpful in deciding.

I have no experience in WY to help you out.  Having said that I don't think anybody will be able to help out unless you narrow it down to the unit you are looking to draw.  My advice would be not to say the unit and just give it a try.  Worse thing that will happen is you don't find the buck you want but you still hade a great hunt.  A rule of thumb for most western states is the "trophy" units are the more difficult to draw units.  I would assume that WY falls into that catagory, they are all about making money off hunters.

What part of the state are you putting in for? I am from the Powell Cody area in wyoming and very familiar with the public land all around the big horn basin. If so let me know, just thought I would check with you. I know its very hard to find spots, even more when your from out of state.

I was born and raised 1 1/2 miles away from the wind river range of the rocky mountains in wyoming and could possibly give you some pointers as to where to go. What area are you applying for? I drew my tag last year and had really good success and saw quite a few 160 to 185 class mule deer. Just let me know the area.
