Fellow fishing buddies;
                I have been monitoring the Deer and Upland game populations in Barnes Co. south of Valley City during the winter of 2008 -2009 since the end of deer gun season. My ives were two fold, first to monitor the climatic impact on winter survival and the percentages of different age groups within a deer population study groups.
                The Pheasants study groups consisted of 10 to 15 individuals per group. The Sharp tails 6 to 12 per group. I didn’t see enough Hungarians. My survey lasted until mid January on upland game. The only pheasants I’ve seen since that time were following the deer herds. I think they took a heck of a hit in late January. The Sharp tails on occasion are now down to 4 to 6 per group.
                The deer survey has been very rewarding. The deer population has survived the winter in great shape. Do to the amount of corn left on the section and brush adjacent to their bedding area. I’m going to post only the statistical averages of my counts along with photos of the 200 + study herd.
The Statistics include the numbers of Fawns, Yearling doe, Two plus year old does and Bucks’ Bucks were identified using a spotting scope. Can you guess what I was looking at? Now that is kinky.
                The does were separated by face length and the amount of grey color on their nose.
                The counts were obtained on sight and with photos that were later viewed at home on my computer.
                The results: Fawns 38%, first fawn does 26%, 2+ year old does with fawns 15% and bucks 21% within the herd.
                I will continue this project for at least the next 3 years, God willing, for my own data and who else may use it. If you think this something that you would like to be a part of contact Tim or Eric

Just what I thought - - lets hope the G & F do the same type of survey before issuing a gizzilian deer permits and leaving a 12 bird possession limit and a season open forever.    Or will they have their $$$EYES$$$$$ closed.
Stay thirsty my friends

you know me - MR NEGATIVE.    I heard Doug L. talking about that last mountain lion and how frost bit he was.   This stuff is not going to quit..   I remember 1997 well; however the western part of the state recieved more chinook winds and did not have the snow cover.  The G&F was not managing the deer numbers either like they do now and one bad year didnt have much effect on the numbers.
Stay thirsty my friends
