I'm looking at taking a friend and her kids camping Memorial day weekend. I'm thinking about Lake Metigoshe. I really want to get her boy hooked on fishing so I want to go somewhere we can catch a lot of fish even if it is just gills. Any advice would be greatly appreciatted.

We will probably be up there that weekend also, my parents have a cabin there.  If you are interested in catching a lot of northerns in the 2-5 pound range that is the perfect place to start.  Will you have a boat?

Her son is almost 4. We will be in a boat. And no I'm not limited to Metigoshe I'm just looking for a good place for the kids and a good campground.

If you have never been there, Lake Metigoshe is a very nice lake to camp at they have several campgrounds lots of trees and its easy to get out of the wind if needed.  It does tend to be chilly that weekend ussually 10 degrees cooler then the rest of the state.  If the weather is nice boat traffic gets pretty heavy on the big weekends.  The local bait shops have a hard time getting minnows for some reason, or I just go in there at the wrong time.  I have been fishing that lake since the early eighties so if you go there I could give you some pointers, but if your fishing for northerns its pretty easy stuff.

Memorial Day is usually really good for white bass up on Devils.  Hit channel A and throw panther martins.  Those fish are easier to handle than pike.  Even though you most likely will find some pike.

Auggie how easy would those white bass be for a 4 year old to catch? I really wouldn't mind headed out that way seeing as how I have been to DL a few times. And I really like Grahams Island camp ground.

Bird,

Concur with Auggie,

A 4 yr old in a boat fishing white bass would be relativily easy. Find them, anchor down, and bobber fish with minnows. Plenty of campgrounds in the local Devils lake area.

Thanks guys. Just one more thing. Where to find them? Will they be up in timber or somewhere else?

Bird,

I would love to give you a few spots......... But your a Pecker fan, ooops I meant to say Packer fan!!! LOL

When fishing white bass at devils from either shore or boat, target the wind blown shorelines, the longer it has been blowing in one direction the better as the white bass will follow the baitfish.

If you still are not having luck, look for the families of Mongs fishing from shore, they have a thing for eating these white bass or something about using the fishheads in soup and for the most part, thats all they are after.

Oops forgot, I normally find them against the rocks on the shorelines, not so much in the trees even though i'm sure there are a few there.

Thanx walifan. I guess it just comes from my dad starting me that young. I know how much I enjoy the outdoors now and I owe that all to my dad starting me out when I was about 4.
