If you are going to set up and call, why not have both handy?

open range hunting .17 up to a .243 calber. High fence hunting go from a slingshot up to a .50 caliber. Its not really a sport anyhow.

Whatever you have that you can accurately shoot out to about 300 yards. Like others, I tend to carry a shotgun at night  as well as they can sneak up on you better during low light conditions. Otherwise, I only carry a rifle.

If you are trying to save fur, then shoot a .17 centerfire or .204 or something that will either open up on the inside of the animal and not exit or a heavy bullet that will pass through.

If you can get them in tight, then a shotgun works well, but this is the exception and I wouldn't call it the norm.

seriously tho anything you got in the gun cabinet will do the trick from a bow to a precision long range rifle.
