It would depend on the water source.  Are you talking a "fresh" mountain stream, or a low land beaver dam?

The difference is in suspended solids and the expectation of bacterial contaminants.

I've got the MSR "pump" style. I bought mine back in 2006 and have brought it along on numerous backpack trips. They are lightweight, have an adapter that hooks right over the mouth of most water bottles and most importantly, I have yet to have any "gut rot" from the water I've drank. I would recommend getting the msr chlorine drops. It comes in a little 2oz bottle that you add after filtering.

we use one similar to the picture posted above up in canada. fits on a nalgene bottle. nobody has been sick yet drinking lake water and tang for a weeks period. if youre going to use it many times one with a ceramic filter will lost longer.

The two mentioned tend to be the most popular in the Boundry Waters.  Dont think you can go wrong with either one.

Back in the late 60's when I was in the boundary waters we just kept our tin cups handy. Anytime we were thirsty we scooped a fresh cup full. No one ever got sick.

Times have changed.

Did the exact same thing in the early 80's. I would think you still could on that body of water. Also in the mountain run off. worst case secenario you get a bad case of the grippers.

If we're not supposed to eat animals, how come they're made out of meat?

I went on a trip to voyagers national park and drank some lake water.  Destroyed the toilet in that house boat, became my private room after a few episodes.  Learning experience.

Katadyn Hiker Pro if you must filter. Remember to use a coffee filter as a prefilter if there is a lot of sediment as to not prematurely plug the internal filter.

If the water is clear running, I like aqua mira drops. It takes a bit of time to work but much lighter. I generally carry two 1.5 liter platy bags.

I have seen some nifty gravity filter setups for basecamps where you have one untreated resevoir and one treated resevoir with a gravity filter/tube setup between them. It's a nice way to filter lots of water with little effort.

I think you understate how serious that "worst case" can be.
