Well we got some bad news today.  Our one year old yellow lab just finished her cycle and ended up with an infection.  She has as palanuma s/p fancy word for an infected uteris.  She needs to be fixed, cost to do it today is 2500 and on Monday if she makes it that long will be a grand.  Geesh this really sucks its the dog my son saved up to buy. My wife and I have decided that we will wait until Monday 2500 is just way more then we can afford.. So its kind of a bummer around here right now.  The only saving grace is the boy is down visiting his dad so he doesnt know about this yet and will be able to enjoy Christmas.  So if you get the chance say a little prayer for our pup

Sotaman, I am not a vet but had a similar issue maybe, with one of my hounds.  When I took her to the vet they told me I would have to spay her but she is the only one of four that I really would not want to spay.  I believe I put her on antibiotics but she came through it fine without any substantial expense.  Maybe another opinion is in order as soon as possible.  Let me know if I can help out some way.

I am no doctor or vet, but if someone has an infection you put them on anti-biotics stat.  If it was your wife would the doctor spay(histerectimy) her?  I think not.  Call some more vets.  The one you have sounds like a bit of a prick.  Why would someone make you wait until Monday to help your hound.  At least he/she could have referred you to someone else.  Get on the phone Sota.

I think your looking at the operation plus antibotics and the possibility of still not making it through.
Stay thirsty my friends

We could have surgury right now at the cost of nearly 3G I can not afford that.  We have decided to wait until Monday or put her down if she turns for the worse, at the end we want to do what we can.  But three grand is not an option either.  I know I may get beat up for that comment but it is what it is.

I don't understand why it would be less expensive on Monday?   Surgery is surgery.
Yes, on Xmas day it is an inconvenience for a vet to come in and do it and he/she might have to call in extra help, BUT, being formerly in the medical industry, an emergency is an emergency, and that's why someone is designated to be on call.  You just do what you have to do, and don't complain  or charge extra IMO!
Sounds like you better either change vets or move back to ND, Sota!    Hope your dog does OK.
I'm no vet and don't want to look like I'm second guessing the vet,  and it is likely speying the dog is the treatment of choice with a severe endomyometritis, plus plenty of high powered antibiotics of course, but to wait till Monday baffles me!  If its bad enough to require major surgery like that it makes no sense to wait!?!  IMHO
I wouldn't worry about speying the dog unless you are planning to breed her, but if she is that badly infected she might end up sterile anyway assuming she survives, at least human bitches  probably would!    Just kidding, girls!

Our local vet charges a lot higher fee for weekends, holidays, and after hours calls on livestock too.  Sometimes it's less costly to take a chance and wait until regular hours or to just let the animal die.  When it comes to pets they know that there is an emotional attachment so the prices go way up.  It is a inconveneince fee.
