Trees.........I need a couple

Back home (LaMoure) my old man is always tearing out what I think are nice trees. He is always replanting something new though. The trees he takes out are always 'in the way' or 'ugly' or even 'too messy,' according to him.

I am looking for two trees that someone wants 'out of the way' in or around Bismarck. I live in south Bismarck. They can't be so large that they won't fit in a standard tree spade though. Of course, I will be hiring the tree spade.

My two 'preferred' trees would be an apple tree, for the back yard, and a medium sized tree, like a mountain ash??, for the front yard.

I am definately open to other types of trees, so please send me names of what you have.

Thanks in advance!

If "too messy" is one of the criteria, I wouldn't get a berry bearing mountain ash.

As a matter of fact, with the emerald ash borer a virtual certainty to show up in eastern ND over the next 10, 15, XX yrs,  I wouldn't put in any kind of ash.

Maybe a locust tree would be nice.  They have smaller leaves and make good ornamental specimens.  Just a thought.

A mountain ash is not a true ash species so it will be unaffected by EAB.  I wouldn't plant one anyway because they get fire blight badly.  I would just go to a nursery and purchase a quality tree.  sometimes transplanting trees that are too large are very hard on them.

Good advise by Tubby, go to a good nursery and buy a couple of bareroot trees this time of year. Bareroot can be planted until early June and cost 1/3 to 1/2 less than potted or container grown.  A couple of good varieties to check out on apples, Fireside or Honeygold, both good eating and good keepers. Medium sized trees, look at a variety of Little leaf linden like Shamrock, or maybe  variety of amur maple. Good luck!

One of the most beautiful trees I've seen in Bismarck is a pear tree.  It is located in the front yard at 921 N 32nd Street.   Beautiful full round tree that actually bears fruit but not to maturity.   I would like to plant one of those or similar; just a thought.

Have to agree with tubby,  find the type of tree that you might like and get a bare root tree or even a potted one-- lot's cheaper than getting one moved.  Also have to agree with tree guy,  lindens are beautiful trees.  go to NDSU extension web site,  lot's of good info there.  They also have a Q&A area called hortiscope,  their horticulturist answers questions asked of him.

jsthntn,

Have you actually looked into this at all? Ash and apple trees are probably your most problematic "starter" trees. And on top of it all, you want to transplant trees from another part of the state. That pretty much guarantees that if they have a disease, you will spread it to south Bismarck. FOrtunately there aren't a lot of trees around south Bismarck. Oh, except BY THE MISOURI RIVER, WHICH IS BLOCKS FROM YOUR PLACE.

A couple of links to check out...

The pear tree Rostorapper is talking about is most likely a Prairie Gem Pear, which is an ornamental pear for NDSU, the parent plant is from the experiment station in Carrington, ND. I like this tree alot, it does set fruit which is not edible. Beautiful white flowers in May, nice reddish-orange fall color, very dense-compact -oval tree. If you are set on a Mountain Ash,use the variety Showy. Mountain ash can not get EAB, but can get Fireblight- a leaf disease. Again good luck with your selections...

We have some kind of pear tree here that I planted 10 - 15 years ago.  Bears a lot of fruit every year!  In fact, I've advertised in FBO a few times for people to come and pick em and give them away to anyone who wants them.  Way too many for two of us.

They require cross pollination, but my neighbor has one and I planted another one a few years ago though the &^$% cottontails ate it pretty well last winter.as its still small, but still alive..
Have no idea what kind it is.

I planted a Ure pear for my dad 20 years ago, Canadian variety, more of a round smaller pear, like an Asian pear. Some what gritty texture, but tastes good. He spitls them in half, takes out the stem & seeds, leaves the skin on and makes a pear sauce, oh is it ever good! Pears don't keep too long, so this works to extend use. I also planted a Parker pear for him, about 5 years ago- it beared around 10 pears last year, more like a bartlet pear- larger size. The edible pears look just like the ornamental pears as far as the tree structure, but you get the benefits of the fruit. bobkat if you are in the Minot area- when your fruit is mature- take some down to the boys at Lowe's Garden Center- they should be able to tell you what kind of pear you have.Laters.
