I just picked one up. The first time I used it it kept the mosquitos away but there were little water bugs swarming the lantern that it didn't keep away.

+1 Love mine!
The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

It does take maybe 10-15 minutes to become effective as well...so don't put it out and expect it to instantly keep them bugs away. For us if we're using it on the deck or by the fire I usually but it out a few minutes before evey one sits down....and yes wind is a factor.

...question ??? how do you guys know when to change the skeeter pad? is it when it turns completely white?

brindle is as brindle does

That would be correct.
