Not good at all. Won't take long for them to spread to other waters now.

Maybe they will let us use shotguns instead of bows! Bad deal for sure.

How detrimental is this to the health of the fishery? I haven't really read anything about the effects they have on other fisheries but I don't expect the prognosis to be good...

Walleye,
Look up the Illinois River and the effects of these fish.  Need to stop them fast if this is real because they can and will wipe out all native fish in the fishery.  This could be devastating.

The best thing they could do is poison the entire river (don't know if they really could) Full scale erradication, and a dam right before it enters South Dakota...... where would the money come from? Would a boat ride require football helmet and pads and be adults only for fear the kids could be knocked out of the boat? This really does suck for those that fish that river.

My question is, can they survive our climate in north dakota? Ive heard they like cool water, but there is a difference between cool water and water that is frozen over for 4-5 months.  I guess im hoping its similar to how the gizzard shad can survive in oahe, but not the upper missouri/sakakawea. Sometimes just a few degree's can make all the difference.

From what I've read just today, they have the ability to adapt to varying conditions very quickly.  The following website states that some fingerlings were put in a low oxygenated environment and within a relatively short period of time they had developed a jaw designed to help them consume more oxygen, and upon placement back into an oxygen rich environment the jaw was gone?  It also states that they can survive between 23 and 60 degrees latitude.  Sounds to me like they may be here to stay.

I think their native range extends into Siberia... so doesn't sound good.

We sure can make a mess of things. Pretty depressing.

Their home is listed as the Amur River in Russia. 52 degrees North latitude. That is the same latitude as Kiska Island, Alaska

Your right, that is depressing. It almost seems inevitable that these things will eventually be in the entire mississippi/missouri river system, unless we can come up with a way to get rid of them. The question is will it be 2 years or 20.

In a state where better than 10% of the entire populaiton fishes...I think the NDGF should allow anglers to declare open season on these fish.

Most anglers would be more than happy if the NDGF pointed them in the right direction.
