I was wondering the same thing..... With mid to upper 40's and this crazy wind it has to be taking a toll on the ice. heard there is still a lot of open water down there yet so may be very limited fishable ice.,,, Last thing they are going to want to do is put 900 people in danger of falling in.......

Sounds like they are planning a meeting on the 5th.

IT IS BETTER TO ASK FOR FORGIVENESS THAN ASK FOR PERMISSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bingo. They posted on their website that a meeting will be held January 5th and they will discuss any changes then.  They also said it will not be a boat/ice tourney and that right now it's looking like the boundaries may change.

Im guessing things will push north. Not sure how that will affect fishing hours and the like however. If the weather stays the same it will be about 60 degrees warmer than the last two years

Heard the same things. Worst case is that if the ice is shaky they will either move the boundaries; or else just draw for prizes. No boats. If they do just draw for prizes; I hope they do it all on Friday night. If this is the case; and there is access, we will be bringing a boat. Heard the open water fishing to the south is lights out. Took the weekend off; might as well play the cards a fella is dealt. Safety FIRST. It doesn't take but one irresponsible person to give the whole thing a black eye; and make some negative headlines. Man can't control mother nature. It would; however, put the committee in a tough spot in terms of "Must be Present to Win". From what I saw last year; this is the best run event in terms of variables and volume. I have full support  of any decision they might make. Who knows; maybe an FBO Texas Hold Em' table might break out. My wife doesn't know anything about any variables other than the fact that I will be attending. CAN'T WAIT!

One step at a time...Be careful.

Fishing is lights out down south and was at swan  yesterday and with a few more nice days the ice will be broke out and be able to go out of there.  Did not look at walth might be able to get out of there.  It is all clear from indian creek south, and really tore open on the west side yeasterday from sitting bull down with pcokets fo white caps every where.  Talked to some guys who fish alot and they went to pollock and got a northeren and 12" walleye with about 8 inches of ice up there.  That wind was brutal yeaterday with the wind puching water on the ice there was white caps on top of the ice.  If they do just draw i hope it all done on friday also but i only have to travell about 3 blocks to get there

Is there even enough ice to properly space individuals out up north?  Lake Sakakawea with exception of the New Town bridge and north really has no ice.  I heard a report from my buddy that a guy we know who fishes a lot was standing on 4 inches of ice just south of New Town.  That's crazy stuff for this time of the year.  I remember it being like this before; however, but still is not what I call ideal for ice conditions.

According to forecast in Mobridge the temperatures barely get low enough even during the night to induce freezing.  I have a feeling I am going to make other plans.  The last thing I want is to have to sit shoulder to shoulder with someone.  I guess we'll wait and see.

Tim maybe if they made the boundries to the state line that would make it big enough but the ice is still iffy and not what i would want a bunch of people who dont go on oahe on regular basis going on.  Heck 2 years ago when there was 2 feet of ice we found spots where the truck tires fell in by pollock with springs and swirling that occured up there.  If only we would of had a few cold snaps it would be a fun year as access would be awsome with out all the snow for once.  The long term is not looking good for ice but if boat fishing stays this good and it is going to be 50 in december guess i will just have to deal with it

Kurt,

You got it man, me having never set foot down that way I do not feel comfortable at all playing the ice game.  Hence my comment...ha ha!

Yeah, I guess roll with the punches.  If God says you fish in a boat, you fish in a boat!  Last year we were whining it was too cold and too much snow.

Sorry all, I have been monitoring over on SDO, and haven't checked FBO lately.  The committee is going to meet on the 5th to talk about alternate plans.

Yesterday was certainly not an ice making day.  20 MPH winds and 45 degrees tends to cut up the ice.

Once we have the meeting on the 5th be assured that we will have all of our internet media updated with changes.  We are looking at expanding boundaries north as there is open water south.  One thing that is for sure is the tournament date.  We will keep the date that it is scheduled.

Again, I will keep you posted on any changes!  Who would have thought that we would have to have this discussion...wanna cuss Mother Nature, but it has been nice so can't complain to much!

Jesse,

You only had 20 MPH winds?  Lucky dog!  Ha ha.

Let me know how I can help with informing the public when the time comes.

Thanks,

Tim

Thought I would bump this up to the top in the event that anyone has any comments to get to Jesse before the meeting tomorrow.

Obviously this is a Committee decision and they do a hell of a job, but it doesn't hurt to have a little more insight from the fisherman.

Sounds like there is still some pretty good ice to the North but I've heard that it varies a lot in thickness within a few yards even.

Possible record highs this week aren't helping, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed as I've really been looking forward to this tournament.

I keep hearing it is go. I will be honest, I wouldn't hold it but I am not on the committee. Reports I hear are 4 to 6 inches of ice. That's ice we drool over in November and December but in almost mid-January and we have to tippy toe like it is April ice.

Temps are not and have not offered freezing. If anything we are lucky to not lose ice. Which with 50 degree to 60 degree temps and high winds we are definitely not making ice. Plus no snow on ground or ice allows shores to heat up. Did I mention high wind warning today?

Anyway, today is the day. Temps dip a bit but all they will offer is maybe a crusting of ice by next weekend. Am I sallying out? No, I just wouldn't want that responsibility.

Tough one to make!

Looks like a little dip and then right back into the high 40's or low 50's on Monday and Tuesday.
