Sprucing up a rifle stock

I have a rifle stock with a few nicks in it here and there. It is from a Winchester 670 which was probably made in the 70's.  I plan to touch it up with a little stain. It looks like the finish is a high gloss varnish. Can I rub the repaired spots with high gloss tung oil or should I using polyurethane instead?

I don't know if I have ever noticed a high gloss finish on a winchester.  Winchester tended to use satin finishes.  Take a look at a Remington BDL for something that has a high gloss finish.

I'd probably suggest using a satin finish tung oil to touch it up.  I love tung oil for such applications as the varnish is mixed in already and as long as you wipe the rest of the stock clean it won't affect the finish.

Touching up a stained wood is always difficult.  On one old .22 I owned a long time ago, the stock was full of deep nicks and scratches.  No chance of trying to make it look like new again without sanding so the better thing to do was use a heavy oil to simply darken the scratches and serve as a protectant from moisture.

Great little gun, wish I still had it.

Jake;A670 is basicially a post 64 Model 70,with out  the fit and finish. It should be a birch stock ,with a blind mag. They generally had a semi-gloss finish. It should have pressed in checkering.I personnally wouuld, start over.Completely Zip-strip the stock.Any bad dings a dents, can be raised by placeing a wet rag and appling heat with a your wife(mothers)  steam iron. then sand lightly with steel wool .You can apply ,a oil base stain, and a tong oil-true oil- or boiled lin-seed oil .finish.This will turn out to be a hand rubbed satin finish. If you need more Info.Give me a cll Ken -701-252-8982

For a gloss finish, strip, sand, stain, and apply a few coats of automotive clear coat.
