SNOW 2008 GMC Crew Question

Snow, or anyone that has knowledge to this;

2008 GMC Crew. Took it in because the rear end anti-slip was lockin up when in reverse. Felt like you were in 4 wheel drive on concrete. Has happend 4 times in last 2 months. Took it in to get looked at, of course it is VERY difficult to duplicate a inconsitent problem. Any who, they couldn't duplicate it BUT they said that when they started the truck after sitting out overnight in the cold, there was a "Tick" coming from the engine.

I got a phone call yesterday saying that the "tick" is a big problem in my engine and they are needing to replace the cams and lifters.

Mileage: 40,300

Considered drivline so they are taking care of it under warranty.

Now, my question is, how big of problem is this for this vehicle?

They said this was only the 2nd one they have seen with this few of miles.

Any insight?

Hmmmm... i think you are thinking of 5.3L.. very rare indeed often times i have heard the tick you are referring to, and have been told it is piston slap in the cylnder. Supposedly some of the 5.3's are overbored and until they reach operating temp. there is just a bit too much clearance.. as far as the rear diff. I would guess that u have moisture in the rearend, and the lube will need to be changed.

To bump and risk partially hijacking the thread.

Any years to avoid between 2003 and present in either 1/2 or 3/4 ton Chevy's? (Yes, all Ford and Dodge guys will say ALL, I know)

It's not that bad.

waly~

Rear end issues, negative unless A) someone was stuck more than once and fried the rear end or was spining the rear wheels and hit dry pavement more than once or B) backed to far into the water launching your boat and water came in thru the vent tubes of the rear end housing (see owner manuel),the water would have to come over the rear wheel hubs.

Now the 5.3's (flex fuel) engine has issues, starts with oil consumption, have you noticed your truck burning oil?,the valves and lifters or cam are a short term fix but these issues usually start to happen around 60K on problem engines, get the work done and keep an eye on your oil level, report oil consumption even if its down 1/2 quart, make sure your shop documents it and get copies, further issues I can fill you in on whats next.

Knowone will admitt it from GM but even tho I'm not a wrench some of my guys agree the issue lies because of the active fuel management, engaging and disengaging, would make sense since GM had similar issues years ago with the cadilac northstar engine, only the engine would jump from 4cyc,then 6cyc from 8cyc,cycle back and forth all day long, burned oil like crazy...So far we have not seen the oil issues in 2009 thru 2011~

A few weeks ago, Snow mentioned to avoid the current yr Duramax due to troubles with the DEF tank/lines freezing.

I have a 08 chevrolet wt with a 5.3. I have 73000 miles on it. It has a lifter tick every once in awhile. I have done alot of heavy towing  It may burn 1/2 a quart between oil changes but nothing excessive. So far it has been a good truck with a few minor problems.
I think the diff lock is a mechanical detroit locker type. Sounds to me like it is locking when you change direction (forward to reverse) on dry ground where is shold release.

I dont think they have a mechanical detroit locker in them..... I looked at a 06' chevy the other weekend for sale.... his rear end had gone out about 2 months ago.... it was a limited slip... and he upgraded to a full locker from the factory for $600.... i think it is only a special option to order from the factory with a locker in it?

Ford does now.  Their limited slip prior to their electronic locker could be problematic.  I had 2 clutch pack replaced in mine inside of 60K.  1st one right @ 50K, 2nd just before 60K.  This was on an '05 F-150 Crew.  I towed my 18.5' Crestliner quite a bit as well as a 14' 3-place snowmobile trailer but nothing heavier with any regularity or for any distance.

GM uses the Eaton G80 locker (Detroit Locker) in their vehicles.  This is actually common with the G80 while backing.  The G80 is mechanical.  They clunk and at times are difficult to drive.  You can get them for the front too, but only recommended for off-road use only.  They also tend to wear tires more.  Awsome traction though.  This winter I pulled a friend out of the ditch when other trucks w/ limited slips couldn't do it.  This same occurance is identified in several internet threads. Google Eaton G80 locking differential.

Any issues with an 08' Chevy with the non-flex fuel 5.3L?

waly, right outof a 2011 manuel on page9-69 (should be the same as your 2008 book) it could be your traction control`

"The traction control system may activate on dry or rough roads while accelerating while turning or abrupt upshifts or down shifts of the transmission, when this happens a reduction in acceleration may occure,or a noise or vibration may be heard, this is normal."

Just a thought~
