Rural Satellite Internet

Looking into upgrading our internet options. From everything I can find we are limited to the satellite option. We are DirecTV customers and that is one option. Anyone have any suggestions? Pro or Con?  Where else should I be looking? Lot of money to plunk down if it doesn't work out! NEED FEEDBACK!
Thanks
Mr. Mike

I guess it would depend on where you are located.  My boss uses Extend America and seems to be happy with it.  My co-worker uses Satellite internet and it works for him but there are some limitations. I don't recall right off hand what they are, I'd have to check with him tomorrow and find out.

Have you checked to see if DSL is available in your area?

Thought of another option - internet through alltel/verizon. I've never used it so I don't know how good it works

Thanks bckhntr
DSL is not an option. I researched all of that and it won't work in our neck of the woods.
We are north of Larimore, ND about a mile and a half North of HWY 2
Thanks

Since you said you were a Directv customer, I assume you were talking about Hughesnet.  That looks really expensive.  Wow.  I don't know what difference those download speeds make but the top of the line plan is like $349/month. WTF?

That's AFTER you buy the equipment or lease it.

Even the cheapest plan is more than most providers.

Check with Invisimax, a friend of mine is really happy with the service. They are constantly adding  transmitters to increase their service areas.

I tried a Verizon aircard while on vacation and it worked great.   Speed was a little slower than my midco high speed internet but not enough to make a big difference.

Fish-head and Morinski are both right. I live a few miles east of you Mr. Mike and I have Invisimax, and Polarcomm was also available, although they had a weeker signal where I live. I give invisimax about an 8 out of 10. But I also have the basic internet speed. I had a problem with a wire they installed about 2 months after I had purchased and had it installed and they came out and fixed it for free the next day! Good luck.

I live near Larimore dam and I could not get invisimax, polarcomm wireless or DSL. I opted for Wild Blue Satelite for $53.00 per month. I have had it since August 2007 and I am pleased with it. It is not as fast as cable internet but it is way better than dial up. Since I have had it it has only had trouble connecting maybe 2 or 3 times. Overall I would recommend them. If you want to spend more money they have higher speed packages than I have. Mine is the cheapest/slowest package and it has worked for me.

Here's the information I got from my co-worker.

From my perspective: A bit high priced (but I also have a larger package), a bit slow at times, doesn’t like really stormy days. Faster than dialup though, and I don’t have to have the phone line put back in, pretty reliable (other than the heavy cloudy days) (I think broadcast DTV has been down more in six months than the internet has been in the past two years.).

I have Hughsnet and paid $69 month after the equipment was paid for. It works fast.

we have dsl and the upload speed is the same as dialup but the download speed is about 3 times faster than dialup. But that is because of RTC..Uploading is a joke. As poor as the upload speed is you have a hard time with any viedo on the confuser.
It just seems that the phone companies do not care about rural people only the rural cities.Rural cities get cable and rural people get 2 channels unless you have dish or direct ,but with the satillete it costs  more to watch tv than it does to heat the house. Basic packages are not worth having so the upgrades and added channels kill a persons pocket book, I do not like paying 1 month in advance.

satellite internet providers should work just fine for most folks.  imho, the only time you should shy away from satellite internet providers (unless its too expensive of course) is if you plan on doing a lot of online gaming on the internet.  even though the signals travel at or near the speed of light, there can be as much as a half second or so of lag time because of the distance involved in shooting a signal to the satellite and then back down to earth to the people you are playing against.  a half a second can mean the difference between life or death when you are staring down the barrel of a plasma gun wielded by some mutant alien from alpha -2 (made all of that up) or racing around the indianapolis speedway gunning for the checkered flag.

Thanks for all the info Guys. We did have Polar High Speed until lightning hit the antenna last year and the new one is shorter, so we can't get it anymore. So far it looks like going through Directv and getting a Wildblue system is the cheapest. I will check out the other ones you Guys mentioned too.
Thanks for the help.

Just an fyi,  Verizon will give you an aircard to try for a few weeks at no charge.
