I know alot of you have your own shooting ranges because you live in the country, but I'm just wondering if there are any rules about how far you have to live from your nearest neighbor to set one up? Can you set one up when you are right next to livestock? I'm justing asking before I do it. Wouldn't want to piss anyone off!  ; )
I already know I'm gonna get opinions, but I am looking for legal places to go look this stuff up.
THANKS
I will check back tomorrow morning. I have a bonfire to go tend to. ; )

as long as nothings behind your target I wouldnt worry about it. Get a dirt pile for a backstop. As long as your rifle range isnt facing someones yard, it doesnt matter.

Speaking of, Im looking for somewhere to shoot to 1000 yards near bismarck. I am a member of the moffit gun club but never have any luck shooting past 600 yards because every time I go there, people are shooting from the main line. The closer to Bismarck the better. Just need an idea of clear area where there is a section line with a hill for a backstop that is relatively flat and not too many neighbors that will be pissed if I do some shooting.

I don't think there are any rules governing them, but if there were, the County or Township would be the ones to talk to.
Personally I doubt there'd b e problems as long as:
     1)  It was absolutely  safe - no chance of a richocheting bullet, etc.
     2)  it was to be used just for you and a few friends, not a public thing.
     3)  Not used when people wouldn't want to hear a lot of noise - Sunday morning, etc.
    4)  Little kids in the area could draw objections, even though it is private property, kids are kids.  Like a swimming pool, the aslip-n-fall attorneys would call a personal rifle range an "attractive nusiance"

I have a great 100 yard range very close to Bismarck, but bend over backwards to not annoy or worry the neighbors at all.!  I do have an advantage though, being retired I only use it when the neighborhood is at work, only weekdays, and never after 5 or 6 pm.   We have a lot of neighbors awithin 1/4 to 1/2 a mile, but I'd bet none of them know about my range.  But I try to be a good neighbor and cut a very low profile.  Someone who works 9 to 5 obviously can't work around the neigbors work schedule like II can, though.

You might preempt complaints by going to the townwhip and obtaining a "Special Use Permit"  which might grandfather your range in further down the road if somone complains.   It does entail having a public meeting at the township board meeting and the notice of the proposed range  is supposed to be published here and there, blah blah blah.    In my experience, nobody hardly ever notices this sort of thing and shows up anyway, though it's possible that someone worrying about property values or irresponsible firearm usage might show up.  Even then, the Township board still  might give an approval with strings attatched, e.g. no shooting after 6 pm or before 0800 or Sunday mornings, etc.   Township boards in my experience try to keep everyone happy if they can.
I didn't get a special use permit for my range, though I did for our airport.   Stipulations such as no crop spraying, no night flying, no pilot training, etc.  were easily worked out, and it helped that we got approval from the FAA before starting the process.   Still, we go out of our way NOT to annoy the neighbors - we have our own "noise abatement' landing and takeoff routines, even engine power settings designed to minimize noise to neighbors and subdivisions.   The bottom line with anything unusual like this is to do everything youcan to get along with the neighbors and give them all the consideration you can.  Otherwise there could be complaints and as might makes right, you'd be shut down.
Good luck with it Mike!

I have buffalo behind my range, but a bullet won't go through a tightly bound round bale. Just be sure you can hit the bale!
