Screw the Ram mount rod holders.  The holder itself is OK, but the frigging idiot who designed them has it so they go into or come out of the mount when facing straight out from the side of the boat (side mounts and rail mounts). 

That is a really bad idea because when you get a fish on and you reach to grab the rod, far too often I get the rod and the holder.   And, if you have kids using them, the rod holders end up in the drink for the same reason.

Allen you have them mounted upside down or something. They are like any other rod holder mount. These are the best rod holders imo. On rail mounts they are so easy to make quick small adjustments to the height of the rod tip off of the water. Also the holder itself is the nicest for slipping a spinning rod out of for not haveing a fish detect the tension. But the best reason for the ram is the ease of getting Doubled over crank rods out of. I would not look at any other holders than these. Best on the market that I have had the chance to use. They are all about the same $$. All arround that $25-$30 Mark.

 Allen, turn them around. If my Scottys are on the wrong side of the boat they do that same thing as you indicated.

Hah!  I wish that were the case.  Since they have the "starred" notches on the top, I don't think I could turn them upside down and make them work.

The actual problem is that I thought the mount would be better on the outside of the hull rather than in the passenger compartment.  If I mounted them on the inside of the passenger compartment, the rod holder would then need to be spun 180 degrees in order to lift them in and out of the Ram mount.

Truthfully, I haven't looked at finding a new way to configure the rod holder itself to prevent this.  It sux only a little for me, but when the 4 yr old is taking a rod out, you can eventually say good bye to one of the rod holders as it gets plunked into the water.

As far as holders go, the holder is fine.  It's the mounts that need to be better designed. Or to at least have more options for inside the compartment vs. outside the compartment mounting.

I have been a little hesitant to flip the mounts to the inside of the boat because, well...I already have holes drilled on the outside.

I recommend the Fish-On or Scotty's rod holders. I have RAM's and Fish-On's in my boat (II think the bases are interchangeable) and prefer the Fish-On's for cranking with boards, etc.  I also prefer them for spinning reels too.  I would almost welcome my RAM's to fall out of the boat. 

berkley quick sets on a rail system would be my ideal holder if you use spinning reels.  just make sure you mount the mounts turned the right way or you will have the same problems allen is talking bout.  they run about $14 a piece and come with the mounts for a rail system or flush mounts.  rail extra.

I had Fish Ons in the old boat and while they look like they should fit, they are too snug and consequently I never tried them on the new boat.  I would think though that Ram rod holders would fit in a Fish On mount, may be a little loose though.

Turn the mount holder 180* so that you have to turn them out after you put them in, never loss one or pull it up again. I had the same problem, turned em and now love em.

Get scotty i have had the rams but i dont like the way they are design it takes to long to get the rod out when you have a fish.

that and for getting the line outa the prop, or untangling the kids lines, fetching a beer, or grabbing sandwiches too.
