Post Rifle BOW hunting

I'm on my 5th year of BOW hunting and yet to harvest a buck.  I wanted to summon BOW hunters on their thoughts of post rifle hunting.  I live in South Dakota (moved from Fargo) now and the rifle season ended last weekend.

Any different tactics?  Any scents that help?  Just looking for general advice.

The buck I am seeking made it through the rifle season, so I have 11 days to drop the sharp stick on him.

Thanks in advance.

Rob

Im in south west ND and hunted the last 2 mornings and the bucks are still chasing and receptive to grunting, from what i have tried. I dont use anything differant than I do in the early season as far as scents.  I just spray downa and play the wind.

Yeah tried it this morning. Saw a nice 4x4 with a doe laying on a fence line and we grunted and rattled he stood up but that was about it.  Had a few smaller bucks come in the last few trips from grunting. I cant believe how much they are still chasing. we watched a little one chase a doe for about 45 minutes this morning they ran around the whole time.  Cant figure out why that bigger buck was just laying with that doe....if shes not in heat yet or what.

Deer are pretty much grouping together for winter survival. Find the food source along with the best bedding cover and set up in between. While I'm sure rattling could work as day to day things change, this time of year I wouldn't draw that kind of attention to myself. Travel routes are very stable this time of year if the deer aren't pressured.

Ha. Ok. Probably not best definition but head is a little cob webbed today. This time of year deer will seek out the best cover, which will tend to put more deer in a smaller area. They will also seek out the best, most nutritious food source, which again tends to congregate the deer. All in the name of 'survival'. Hows that?

Listen to hunttoride365 he knows what he's talking about! As pressure dies down with thje colder weather deer look for thermal cover and food sources! Bucks need to put the weight lost during the rut back on to survive the winter! So yes it is survival mode!!!   Deer will start to pattern again, so cameras and visual scouting is a great idea. If you catch one moving get in quick and careful and stick em!!! Good luck!!

Would try a travel route between their bedding area and food source, deer are high strung right now.Set up back as far as you are comfortable of taking a shot, from the trail.Windy day will work better for you,you must be able to pull back your bow with little movement and sound.Best bet is to pull back before he is even in range and hope you can hold it till you make the release.good luck

All the ones I have been seeing are hitting up the corn and alfalfa where i hunt. They looked like they were gonna feed in the corn all day till a little buck started chasing them around.

So my question is what are the early winter food sources out there right now?  I was out twice this weekend and didn't see a single deer.  I hunt along a river with farm fields and farmsteads scattered around on both sides.  I know they are still around as I have them on camera, but only at night.  I don't know where they are bedding for sure because I don't know what they are feeding on now.  I have a bait pile, so they are coming in there, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern.  One night they will come just after dark and then the next night it will be at 2 am.  And sometimes they won't come at all.  All the fields within a 2 mile area are plowed up.  Do they still eat in a plowed soybean field?  Or are they browsing already?  There isn't much for green around anymore.  The nearest plowed up corn is 2 miles away.  There are a couple plowed up beet fields within a mile or so.

I have had pretty good deer mvmt starting about 2 hours before dark. I've seen a big deer I have been after twice now but right at dark. This may change a little with the big deer once we lose this full moon. You may do well by spending an evening driving around and looking for feed patterns. I hunt an area without much crop land, just traditional river bottom, food sources are diffenent than yours. We have some land in SE ND, and from past experience it seems they will still try to find spilt corn after it has been plowed, but there's got to be other sources, such as alfalfa, beans, and peas. I know when I drive up that way, any untilled corn always has deer in it, so finding an untilled corn field may be key.
