I posted pics a while back of an old BRNO 7x57 I inherited.  IMO it's really neat old rifle.  60+yr old fixed 4x scope with the claw mounts soldered right to the scope, and the claw mounts work you can take the scope on and off at will and it returns to zero very well.  I like slim and trim stocks and this one is very svelte indeed.  Very thin through the wrist and a nice narrow forend.  It's a "Mountain Rifle" from well before there was such a thing.  The double set trigger works quite well and once set is I believe 1# or a touch less.  All that said, I'm not going to use an old 175gn round nosed bullet for the sake of nostalgia.  I loaded up some 120gn TSX's and essentially figured on getting 7-08 type of performance, which is nothing to scoff at.  Finally had a chance to send a few down range.  5 shots @ 100yds through the old fixed 4x that has a 2MOA wide (no kidding) post reticle.

The culprit:

It will have it's turn filling doe tags this fall.

I'd say that is more than sufficient.

she shoots pretty good but you should dial her in so they are all inside of that big red square box.  Haa ha   just teasing  .     All I can say is that is a job well done with a  4 X scope with a  Post reticle.   That is easier said than done even with  high quality target rifles.   Did you have it clamped down in a vice ?

Horsager that is a very high quality rifle now and 60 years ago.  The 7X57  It was developed around 1893 and still is a very good cartridge.  Winchester made some of thier pre 64 Model 70's in the 7X57 along with several other rifle  manufactures but the quality of your rifle is far better than most of these.

Nope, front rest, rear bag, 5 shots about as fast as I could single load them.  As to the all in one big red square, that's not out of the realm of possibility, the above group was with virgin brass.  A partial neck size for slight crush fit to get everything straightened up as it chambers often does shrink things a bit.  Interresting, this thing recoils a fair bit less than a similarly weighted 7-08 pushing the same bullet at roughly the same speed, give or take 50FPS.  The 7-08 has an honest to goodness quality recoil pad, the old mauser has a plastic buttplate.  Need to figure actual case capacity now and refind quickload data to see what exactly I'm running for pressure as I'm guessing lower than what I run the 7-08's at, 'tis the only explanation I can think of for the significantly reduced recoil, I just don't think stock geometrey can soak all of it up.
