Headed to Nelson this weekend for the first time, I will be targeting perch and eyes, while the rest of the group is spearing for northerns, they have been there before but don't fish for perch or walleyes, just asking for general information about the lake. Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Nelson is my primary ice fishing location.  I have not been able to get out yet, but plan on it this sunday.  I have heard positive reports so far.  I know that there is plenty of ice out there.  The fisheries biologist in Havre told me they had excellent netting surveys this spring on Walleyes, Northern and Perch were the best in 20 years.  Perching was weak last winter but the winter before was incredible.  So hopefully it is back up again this year.  A little tip.  You might want to call ahead to check the availabilty of bait.  It never fails that the bait shops don't have bait when you want it.  Call ahead to the Sleeping Buffalo or to Westside Sports in Malta to be sure or you may want to pick some up along the way.  Maybe Glasgow.  Good luck.

My uncle lives in Malta and he speaks of this reservoir quite often.  I believe he is out setting his spear shack right now.  Not sure though.  I should take a trip out and fish with the mountain man of our family.  Guy is a bachelor fish and game killing machine.  Will give him a jingle to see if he has any reports.

This reservoir has quite a reputation. It can produce eyes of very respectable sizes. It has always interested me but I have never stopped to fish it when out that way elk hunting. Maybe some year...

Good luck!!!

Now this is a sweet sound to my ears I was born and raised in Glasgow, MT and we had a cabin on Nelson reservoir and used to fish it year round.  I moved to Williston, ND and have only went back to fish it a handful of times through the ice. I cought my bigest Northern there as well as some great eyes and some awesome jumbo perch.

I just might have to see about getting over there this winter as my mother inlaw lives in Malta so I would have a place to stay when not on the ice.  Any reports would be great as I would love to hit the hard water there again this winter.

Born and raised in Glendive we had cabin too, the man to get hold of is Trapper John, web site Ifishfortpeck.com. 20 years ago we hammered the heck out of them, since see dropped so much water it has not been same, fished west end mostly, and did lot of tournament fishing too. Have fun that is Gods country.
