Need Help from the Deer Gods!!!!

I’m about to scream…just a little though!!

I need a little prayer/help from the deer gods on this one guys. My son still has his youth tag. He chose not to fill it during the youth season because all he had reasonable shots on were fawns and he did not feel comfortable with taking one. He makes the call on what to shoot or not shoot, not me.  So now we go into the regular season and a guy in 2B offered up some primo land to him to hunt. We accepted and the first night out, at any given time after about 4o’clock, we were always watching 19+ deer. Well two does come into us at about 50 yds but we were elevated also about 20 feet+ in a really nice house he put us in. He pulled the trigger and missed, pulled again and missed, pulled again and missed. OUCHY!!!! I figured it was the downward shooting that got him because we did not practice that during the summer fun shooting 101. I videotaped the whole thing though.  We called it a night and went back to watch the video and discovered he was “pulling” the trigger, you seen the barrel raise before the gun went off. So with a snap cap, we practiced “squezzing” the trigger instead of “pulling”. Took him back out to shot targets, which I hate doing during the season but needed him to get some extra trigger time. He is a crazy good shooter…..at paper! So we go out again and do a ground hunt where there are about 8 does transitioning from CRP to a potato field. We watched the first two does cross, fawns, and he held out for a bigger one. Well out of the blue, right in front of us is a VERY nice buck. 4X4 way outside his ears and VERY tall, didn’t have the basket shape. He decides he will take it, but we have been busted by him yet he continues to just stand there, proud, broadside, 40 yds from us. Son gets a good bead, shots, misses AGAIN!!!! At this point I am ready to pull my hair out but SOMEHOW remained VERY calm.  At this point the life has been beat out of the kid so I have spent the better part of this week building him back up and we are heading back out to hunt Friday-Sunday.

Do me a favor and ask the deer gods, gun gods, or whomever to shed a little light on him…. Or possibly on me to stay sain!!!!!!

Good Luck and Good Fishin'

As stupid as this sounds, and I'm sure you've already tried this, but have your son sqeeze the trigger sllllooowwwly to the point where he doesn't know when it is going to go off. Also, have him keep the trigger to the rear and listen/feel the audiable click when releasing it forward. He should be squeezing it so slow that he cannnot anticipate the recoil of the rifle. Maybe try to talking him through the sequence while your in the stand with him. "Breath in, now out, in, now out and hold, acuire the target, slowly sqeeze the trigger and hold"

Like I said, i'm sure you have thought of this. But this is all the shooting advise that was taught to me many moons ago.

Speak softly, and carry a big stick.

I really doubt that the elevation was the issue.  My rangefinder has the Ballistic Range calculation and you'd be surprised at how little difference it makes with flat shooting calibers.  You need a steep angle and a long shot to make a big difference.

I wish you the best of luck.  It sure sounds like it is turning into a mental thing now.  He knows how to shoot when punching paper so it's more of a "deer fever" thing.  connect once and it won't be nearly the problem in the future.

Take him out to the range and load the weapon for him, single rounds.  Randomly place a spent cartridge in there without his knowledge and let him pull the trigger.  If he flinches or moves at all have him keep firing and do it until he's solid.  That's how I was taught.

What caliber is he shooting? Flinching can be tough to overcome and just about impossible if the recoil is hurting him ever time he pulls the trigger.

Something that I obviously didn't think about. Good question.

I know a guy  who is classified as a High Master  and has won a lot of shooting matches and he still gets the  fever when shooting at deer.   If you catch deer out a long ways away from the stand and the wind is right so they won't spook have him dry fire a few times. Then  have him tell you where the cross hairs were when he clicked.        I am sure he will do just fine and the tough time connecting with these deer will only make him stronger in the long run.   Good Luck and make sure he is having fun even though he is missing deer.

What caliber does he shoot ?

Got busy and didn't get send right away , I see he is shooting 243.     He will get a lot better as soon as he drops the first one.     He will be one happy boy when he connects.
