Well, work is taking me West to Billings.  I've been doing some research, but hoping to get some feedback on FBO members that are in that area, or lived there.  I am concerned I might loose some Walleye fishing, chasing roosters, and big Whitetails.

I'm seeking any feeback, or just piece of mind I will find plenty of outdoor activiites.

Learn how to flyfish, lots of great little streams not too far away. Lots of deer, antelope, and elk not too far away as well. If you're willing to adapt, you'll do just fine.
The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

You'll be just fine out there.  Far enough away from the liberals and close enough to everything you've liked to do in North Dakota.  The question is, just how far away is good enough to get away from those dang liberals in Montana?

We lived in Billings about 5 yrs ago for about a year. it was definitly an experience!! As far as fishing, I second the trout fishing!! You can fish right on the Yellowstone in Billings but, the further west you go, the better it will be. If you want to take a day trip, there are lots and lots of little rivers west of Billings. Boulder, the Madison, The Big Hole,etc... Hunting will be sweet once you have gained residency, goats, deer and elk for like $80!!!

On a side note, Make sure you shop for vehicle insurance, it is a racket out there and will cost you about 2-3 times what you pay in ND. Licensing your vehicle is another one of their rackets. It is about 4 times what we pay here in ND, but you dont pay any sales tax!!yea ha!!!

Good Luck out there, it is beautiful country!!!

Billings is a good town.  Every major thing happens at the metra.  WAIT did happen at the metra.   1 thing to get into your head is 400 miles is not that far in Montana.  As for fishing west is good trout but east a bit on the Bighorn river is VERY good.  Don't forget that fort Peck is the place to be for big walleyes.  you can even go paddelfishing at the fred robinson  bridge south of Malta.  Whitetails will be all over the Yellowstone.  Go east to find goodspots or get a jet boat and hop islands.  Antelope all over in every direction.  Elk I'd check out the Custer National Forest to the east of you and south.  Bears will be in easy driving distance.  Tons of good goose hunting on the river around Billings.  It's a learning curve when you move but if you keep at it in 5 years you will have things dialed!  Welcome to GODS COUNTRY!!!!!!!   Plus don't for get next year moose sheep and goat!!!!!!
Dead animals don't need fur anyway!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, that town is pretty much centrally located for the avid sportsman.  Not as good as.....lets say Winnet, but not bad.

I say to hell with that pot o' gold.

take advantage of Ft. Peck. I tried to get my wife to move to Ft. Peck country but that didn't go over so well.

Listen to all these nodaks --- nodaks -- The Outdoors starts in MT - the further west or east you go from MT the further you get away from the great outdoors.

Plus the weather is a bonus in Billings ------ especially if you live in the armpit of the state Fargo.   Goodbye to allergies and mold.

Good Luck with the new job! I love MT! I spent a summer riding my horses around the state. Ft. Peck is amazing! Not sure why you would need to learn to flyfish, other than it would be super cool to know how to do, but a  hook, some line wrapped around my hand and a worm did just fine for me while living out of my saddle bags for 4 months. The hunting out there has lots to offer as well. From what I remember of MT its pretty close to heaven or my idea of it anyways.

Cooney Reservoir is a great walleye lake and is only 50 miles SW of Billings.  Here are a few Cooney eyes.
