All you diehard packer fans should jump on board with this and help your team out, shouldn't be a problem if you really love'em.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — The National Football League isn’t known for its sentimentality, but Tuesday’s stock offering by the Green Bay Packers shows that there’s still romance in the sport.

The Packers, whose Wisconsin hometown is the smallest of any club in big-league professional sports, have offered an initial 250,000 shares to raise funds for redevelopment of its Lambeau Field. Each share is priced at $250.

The sale is limited to 200 shares per person, an amount that includes shares bought in the team’s last stock offering, launched in 1997.

Owning Packers shares isn’t like holding stock in, say, General Electric Co. — they don’t pay dividends and can’t be sold or transferred (other than handed on to immediate family members). For Packers fans, the sale isn’t about profit making but helping their team and declaring their allegiance.

“It’s really a mutual declaration of love,” said Bob Boland, a professor of sports management at New York University’s Tisch Center and a former agent and sports attorney. “It’s a way for fans to help the Packers and at the same time the team letting them get to say they’re an owner.”

The Packers, defending Super Bowl champions and flying high at 12-0 this season, are unique among major American sports in being nonprofit and publicly owned. Before Tuesday’s offering, the franchise had roughly 112,000 stockholders owning about 4.75 million shares. The corporation is governed by a board of directors and a seven-person executive committee. No individual is allowed to own more than 200,000 shares.

The latest offering, set to run through Feb. 29, is Green Bay’s fifth, following offerings in 1923, 1935, 1950 and 1997. Proceeds from this year’s sale will help pay for a $143 million project to add seats and amenities to Lambeau.

While fans can’t expect to make money from their shares, ownership does bring some benefits, including an invitation to the franchise’s annual meeting and the chance to buy shareholder-only merchandise.

Boland contrasted the stock offering with other sports teams’ attempts to raise additional funds by issuing personal seat licenses, or PSLs.

At many new sports stadiums, PSLs costing thousands of dollars are required before fans can buy season tickets. In theory, PSLs can be sold on at a profit if the holder doesn’t wish to renew a season ticket, though Boland said his research has found only two franchises, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Bears, where PSLs were selling at a premium to their initial sale price.

“What the Packers are doing isn’t just a seat transaction,” he said. “The equity the team gives is way of saying, ‘I’m investing in my home town or my heritage.’ ”

If there are any shares left to buy after the holiday's I will be buying one or two. Kinda strapped for cash right now with Christmas coming.

I joined the military not only to fight for my country but to fight for those that can't fight for themselves. Thats why I'm here.

Its kinda like buying a hunting lodge with some of your buddies, you all have a share of it, you can brag about owning it, however no one actually ever gets to use it, and you can never sell it.
the entire thing seems a bit cheese headed to me

Sounds like something you would hear in a coversation about hookers.

When i heard this on radio i was thinking about buying.  Then I read that it will be worth absolutly nothing.

Oh by the way I am selling shares on my pickup $50 a piece buy as many as you want.  Your share will be worth nothing now or in the future,  And you will have no rights to my pickup ever (unless you bring some beer).  But everytime I drive by you can stand proud and say "hey i own part of that pickup, lets go buy some beers and see what he is up to."

Oh and any pickup share holders will have first chance on my gun shares in the future.  Coming soon

If I were you, I would be angry that your favorite team swindled you. You have no say in the day to day of the team. You do not get a vote in a stockholder meeting. You make nothing on your investment. You don't even get a ticket to the addition they are making. You would have been better off spending that money on tickets.

The event of the existing crisis will be decisive in the opinion of mankind of the practicability of our federal system of government. Great is the stake placed in our hands; great is the responsibility which must rest upon the people of the United States. Let us realize the importance of the attitude in which we stand before the world. Let us exercise forbearance and firmness. Let us extricate our country from the dangers which surround it and learn wisdom from the lessons they inculcate."

Those of you making fun of this are short sighted to say the least.  I'm thinking it is a bit refreshing to ask the fans and beneficiaries of the team to step up and donate instead of the socialist version of demanding that taxpayers do it for them.  Talk about hookers....What a refreshing concept..... user pay!

The arrogance of the present is to forget the wisdom of the past.
