Ken Griffey Jr retires from baseball making it a sad day for the game. Griffey practically saved the Mariners franchise when he first came up. He ends with 630 career homers, and definately a first ballot hall of famer. I personally was a huge Griffey fan and what impresses me most is that his name has never been drug through the steriod drama of baseball. Goodbye to one of the smoothest swings in baseball.

You suppose he'll find another job to carry him over until he's old enough to draw on his 401(k)?

He was still playing up until this day? He was one of those baseball role models that never ended up disappointing!

Stand up guy and thank the Mighty Lord above that he wasn't tied up in the steroid days.  Although, you look at that era in his stat sheet above and one KINDA wonders.

Funny isn't it with how homers come down and the perfect games and no hitters start to increase.

Just imagine if he hadn't had all those hamstring problems and other injuries during his career...took away about 3 season's worth of games from him when he was still pretty much in his prime.

elvis,

Not being partial to Mauer but man, Mauer has a swing that should be modeled in all pee-wee on up baseball type leagues.

Griffey was on pace to demolish some big records.  The injury bug hit him hard.  Timmy hit on a question that I always had about him.  Why all the injuries all of a sudden?  Followed by a huge drop in production?  Best to leave it alone and I trust that the writers and mudslingers will but it is eerily similar to some others who shouldn't be named with Griffey.  I'm happy to keep believing he was always clean.  I do the same with Lance Armstrong too BTW.

I actually honestly did not remember him hitting 56 jacks in back to back years like that.  Then whalla, it fizzles.  It does raise questions and I'm with you.  I'll just leave it alone.  Heck, I never thought a thing until all of a sudden that stat line gets tossed up and I took notice to 1997 and 1998.

Something else pretty interesting.  Take a look at 1997 and 1998.  Talk about consistent in all stat categories!

The sad part is I think there is always going to be a big ? with the late 90's with any power player. I believe he was clean, he sure didn't change in size as much as Barry or Big Mac. I am sure that part of his injury problems came from how he played the game, I remember many plays where he hit the wall on a dead sprint and made the play. Baseball needs more players like him, Gwynn, Cal, Boggs and all the other old timers that just played the game and never got in trouble.

It isn't iffy if it's Griffey.  One of my favorite SportsCenter homerun calls.  You had to respect him as a "ballplayer."  Even though he was a Twin killer.  I remember the game that him and his dad both hit a homerun.  He was a human highlight reel.

Good point on body size.  Yeah, he never did explode like Bonds and Mac attack.

It was said that he had the fastest swing of all times. He never bragged about himself it was always a team effort. One of the finest players in the last 20 years. Very few errors

Tim everyone knows that Griffey's productivity declined because of injuries. After 2000, he was hurt almost every year. They didn't even start testing for steroids until what 2004? If he would have been on steroids, he would have had the same productivity until then. And plus, I would never call someone who hit 30 homers in a year as having a bad year.

There has never been any link between steroids and Griffey Jr. or Frank Thomas. I think those two played the game the right way, and clean. Although their probably the only ones who know for sure. But like was said before, their bodies didn't change drasticly over the years like Bonds, Mcguire, Clemens, etc. It's guys like Thomas and Jr who should be the most upset about MLB drug policy, if they were indeed clean.

Griffey Jr. was fun to watch, hitting and fielding!
