I have a 2000 Ford F150 with just under 100K.  Around 15K ago it started using (not leaking) oil.  Any preventive tricks?  It uses about 1.5 quart every 3,000 miles.

Thanks for the input.

My 2002 went through a quart every 3000 miles from the day I got it with 14,000 miles on it.

When I sold it at 120,000, it still went through a quart every 3000 miles.  I just used that as the indicator for when to change my oil.

This is actually considered normal usage, although some vehicles will burn almost no oil in the same amount of miles. My 1997 Ford F-150 does about the same thing, depending on how hard I use it. I would keep trying different brands of oil to find out what your engine likes and also maybe go to a higher viscosity and see if things improve. I know where your coming from, I would like to have not to worry about checking the oil level or adding between changes. Awesome truck otherwise,

Hi seen this problem before! Have you changed oils (brands)?  The current oil you use is it a synthetic blend, full synthetic or convetional oil?   Ive seen where oil companys have changed there oil from a convetional to a synthetic and you will see oil consumption! but normally will quit. If this isnt the case change oil brands for a couple changes!!  Most moters I see now days burn a qt or two between oil changes, not all but some.  I hope this helps!

Congratulations, it realy doesnt matter, some do and some dont, I had a 1986 Tempo that never burned a drop of oil, even after I overheated the engine.

from the consumer reports article:

"The Chrysler brand was rated least reliable, behind five other U.S. nameplates. A Chrysler statement said CR "uses a three-year window of vehicles to judge reliability" so improvements in warranty claims "over the past 18 months" aren't yet reflected in the annual survey."

I have an older F-150. There could be a $3.00 fix. It could be a simple EGR fix. Had the same problem on my pickup, was going through over a quart every 1000 miles. If the EGR is plugged, it will cause the crank case to pressure up and plug the crank case filter. On my ford there is also a crank case breather, like a filter, underneath the air box. I checked that and it was PLUGGED, replaced both the egr and the crank case breather, switched over to mobil 1  synthetic, and have over 3500 miles on it, and have not gone through a drop of oil.

If you had a plugged egr you will get a check engine light! the year ford he is talking about doesnt have a crank case filter.
