Digital camera for sportsman

I, like most outdoorsman, want to bring back memorable experiences with a photo. The problem is with all the different digital cameras on the market which one to buy. My basic needs were 10 mega pixels, at least 12 power zoom, under $400.00 and user friendly.  I found what I was looking for in a Canon PowerShot SX10 IS. It has 10 mega pixels, 20 power zoom and 80 power digital zoom plus a lot more bells and whistles.

The quality of the camera will be evident in the photos I insert. The photos were taken when the subjects were ½ to ¾ of mile away. The flock of geese was approximately 2 miles away.

I've been pondering the same thing. My old SLR 35mm still takes great shots but is a pain to develop, transfer etc. What did you pay for the SX10 and where did you get it?

tonka2; The camera was 350 to 375 somewhere around that. The case, memory card and pack of 24 batteries 4- AA put the total at $462.00. Purchased at Best Buy in Fargo That's another thing it doesn't need a special battery you can get them anywhere.

So I take it this camera is not a hybrid SLR.
The trouble that I have with digital cameras is that when outdoors the screens are so light that I have trouble seeing the subject. Also the delay time between the time you press the button and the actual photo is not great.
So how does the Power Shot work in those cases?

BDub; When I use the camera I have the Forcus set to auto. I use the lcd screen on the back of the camera rather than the view finder. Pressing the shutter butten hafe way and holding there until I see the lighted green box on my point of forcus. When you see the green box push the shutter butten all the way. The shutter speed is instant. Make sure the camera is stable. It comes with a light shield. But with the shield or not I have not had that problem. In all the pictures I've taken what I see in the LCD is the way the pics come out. Does this help?

That does help some. I did look at the camera online. It looks like it is made to hold up firmly to your face. Some of the little cameras are just not made for that.  So apparently the display is fairly clear for you. My little Olympus is just very hard to see when outdoors.

Bdud; I never hold the camera next to my face. If any thing I am a foot  away from the LCD so I can make any sight ajustments if needed. Than I if needed release the shutter butten and start over. Which only takes a few seconds.

I have an Olympus Stylus.  Its 10.1Mp and I think it has 4x optical zoom and ~5x digital zoom.  The thing I like about this camera is that its waterproof and shock resistant.  I had an older Stylus for 7 years.  It still works, but is bulkier than I would want it.
