Devils Lake Research

Missed this article but very interesting the research that is going on out there in regards to the size/feeding/growth rates of the walleyes.

Also found the below pasted comment from the article to also be very interesting, maybe the state is starting to come around IMHO. If not, at least they might be keeping an open mind.

Breeggemann’s research, he said, could help determine if walleye growth slows for a portion of the older fish and whether regulations such as length limits — common in neighboring Minnesota — would result in more large fish.

don't often see gill net studies that result in the catch being killed.  wonder what is done with the rest of the carcass?  maybe i am being paranoid... but, for some reason, this study wreaks of they type where the researcher has a desireable end result that could lead to data manipulation.  don't have any idea who jason is.  but, i would like to know his current stance on slot limits.  and, i guess i would have to see the math behind the models.  but, it sounds like the total harvest will be right around 1000 fish and it seems that it would be difficult to extrapolate data for the entire lake from what feels like a small sample size.  either way... interesting idea.

The NDGF uses gill nets all of the time to test waters that have been stocked.  The fish are thrown on the shore or buried.

really... why do they toss them on shore?  i guess i am in the dark on this... won't they live after being caught in a gill net?

No fish survives in a gill net.  Im not sure why they use gill nets vs the type of nets they use for milking.  Im sure there is a reason though.

Probably more effective and by the sounds of it they are killing most of the sample anyhow.

Not all fish die when using a gill net.  Many fish like the bullhead and catfish species can survive being caught in a gill net, although the amount of oxygen in the water, how the fish is caught in the net, and the temperature of the water play some role in determining a fish's survival.  The reason a gill net is used is because the nets you use to catch walleyes for spawning, called trap nets, only work along the shore line in water that's usually more shallow than 10 feet.  Gill nets can be used in water from 0-how ever deep you want a net to be set.

Exactly they are eating tons of shrimp and getting very fat.  Tons of smaller fish always point to overfishing pressure.

Enslow -- did last weekend look like over fishing to you?  Nobody was at the ramps -- and when i went on pelly -- nobody was on that green pasture.   

Weeds is what is changing the lake.
