Hello everyone, haven't put out alot of reports lately mainly cause I have just been just too dar nbusy but wanted to bring up this to see what others are finding.

In a typical summer, I may catch 1-2 perch while fishing for walleye, I do not target perch in the summer but this year has been wild. I have been pulling perch on "accident" the last month in anywhere from about 5 FOW to 21 FOW on crankbaits. On average, I would say that we are puling 2 per day throwing or pulling cranks.

This weekend though took the cake when I had, probably the biggest perch of my life, SWALLOW COMPLETELY a #5 Salmo Hornet at 2.3 MPH, not just the back hooks, the whole darn thing!!

Have you noticed an increase on the perch this summer? I most certainly have and look forward to trying to get a few of those pigs thru the ice.

What has caused, what I feel is "increased" numbers; reduced limits, heavy snow fall the past two years? Or am I just getting real lucky?

Good Luck and Good Fishin'

Eric T

Increased flooded vegetation provided better spawning and rearing territory too.

have caught at least one every time we have been out when we are pulling BBs and spinners.  if a guy could keep the dink walleyes off the line, it would be pretty easy to anchor and pull a limit w/ half minnows and worms.  but, it just ain't worth it to me when i have to toss back 10 13 inch walleyes just to catch and keep 1 12 inch perch.  but, i would totally agree it is a sign of good things to come for ice fishing.  personally, i think it has just taken a few years for the perch population to catch up to the size of the lake cause we have had good spawning habitat for 17-18 years now.

It's not only happening on Devils Lake.  I've been fishing Jamestown Reservoir for most of the summer and I have also been picking up 2-3 perch per outing pulling crankbaits.  However, yesterday the cranking was slow so I picked a random clump of flooded trees in 16 feet of water and dropped a 2 lines down both with jig heads and crawlers.  Within just a couple of minutes I reeled up the largest perch I've seen come out of that body of water, 13.5 inches, 1.5 lbs.  I was in shock.  Finished the day with a limit of decent walleye and 6 perch all around 1 lb.  Good stuff.

Perch are also on the rebound in SAK although they have a ways to go before they have any size to them.  In the past we would go long stretchs, meaning months or even years without any perch and now they seem to be everywhere but they are very small still.

The overall fishing in SAK in 2-3 years is going to be unbelieveable if things stay on the current track.  Walleye's, Notherns, Perch, Small Mouth....I can't wait.

Actually, on sak I think with increased Walleye and pike numbers the perch are going to disappear again. The reason they exploded was due to low #'s of predatorial fish. IMO, the perch peaked in size there a year or two ago.

As for DL, I really hope the perch come back strong. When the Walleye fishing is slow, its always fun to have the option of hammering perch!

I have also been catching alot of perch pulling cranks on Ashtabula.  It's funny cuz they just hammer the #5's and alot of the time the crank is as big as the perch!
Hunt today like there may be no tomorrow!

Caught a jumbo 3 weeks ago on leadcore. Not sure what he was planning on doing with the rest of the thunderstick but he liked the back hooks atleast! Had a couple more while slipping but alittle smaller. Definately the most Ive ever caught in summer though....great to see signs of a comeback.

Was out yesterday and kept 7 perch.  3 of witch were 13".  The others were 11-12".  I have never caught more than one or two perch in a whole summer out there.  Yesterday i must have caught 15 mixed in with the dink walleyes.  Mainly jigging and slipping for eyes in more than one spot.

yup, got a few pitching cranks shallow which is REALLY odd and the usual 2 or 3 pulling lead, maybe they are on the comeback trail, I hope so.
