Is the self life longer for a loaded round than the indiviual components ( powder primers ) not loaded? I have looked in all my manuals and can not find any information on this ?

I was not aware there was a shelf life on either...I think I read some powder might break down over time, but if you have ammo and components going bad you need to get out and shoot more.

I think the shelf life on components is probably the same as loaded ammo, as long as proper storage is being done.    Hogdon made their first money on surplus 4831 originally produced for .50 cals.   Stuff we loaded in the early 70's was produced between the wars.  I wouldn't worry about shelf life, though if your wife complains you hunt too much you can tell her that you should never store that stuff too long!   Could become dangerous!!  LOL
Lewis and Clark in 1804 - 06 had black gunpowder sealed in lead containers, so they could keep it dry and use the powder and melt down the lead, etc.   They found they brought too much and cached some of it along the Missouri and never retrieved it.  If you happen to find some of that stuff while fishing, I'd probably not try to load it, though. LOL

Thats like feeding bullseye to a 300 win mag.
the 3003/3006 was fed 4831, the 50 bmg was fed 5010.

I stand corrected, Jok!   You are probably correct.   I aways thought it was .50cal, although like you say, it might not be slow enough for those bbbbiiiiigggg cases!  LOL
In any case, we sure used a lot of that cheap surplus bulk 4831 back in the 60's.  And shot all kinds of loaded military ammo in 06 and .303 that was loaded for WW1.

I am using powder and primers that are 25 plus yrs old., I store all my powder in vaccum sealed bags. I had one of the first vaccum sealers made. When ever I need powder  use what you need and reseal it. I think the shelf life is forever when vaccum sealed. Primers aree treated the same way. After the brass is sized cleaned and trimmed they go in the sealed bag also, that way they are brass colored not tarnished.
Just my idea of storage.

Definite problems on shelf life and primers.   I take them off your hands - just let me know.   Make sure we have safe "disposal"
Stay thirsty my friends
